Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York

We ended up getting tickets to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall on our trip to New York City.  We thought this would be fun, especially after doing the Radio City Music Hall Tour last time.

I know the Rockettes Christmas show has been going on since the 30s, so this was a cool Christmas thing to do while we were in town.

After going through line to get in, we did have to go through the usual New York metal detector process, but this becomes pretty normal in NYC.  We made our way to our seats and an usher gave us 3D glasses.

The show itself was pretty cool and the dancing and singing and all was perfect.  I think the thing that stuck out to me the most was the lighting in the theater.  Using planetarium like equipment (I assume), they would make the entire theater (walls, ceiling, etc) look like a Christmas village, trains, snowflakes, etc. 

The show was probably an hour and a half long.  There was a double decker bus on the stage for some time (it moved around, and the dancers were on both decks)  There was a segment about a kid not believing in Santa, and there was a manger scene. 

Videos were used, and mixed with some of the live action, and at times, it was pretty seamless.  During the manger scene, people were walking around with animals, obviously taped before, but they really looked like live critters on the stage.

There was lots of singing, and a live orchestra.  I am always impressed by a good drummer, and I did make a mental note that the guy banging on the drums this day was amazing.


This production is amazing, and I understand why some New Yorkers make sure to go to this each year.

There is a brief, maybe 10 minute cartoonish movie shown that the 3D glasses are used for.  That was fun, but the live performance is absolutely over the top.
