"The Vice President's Black Wife: The Untold Life of Julia Chinn" by Amrita Chakrabarti Myers

"The Vice President's Black Wife" is one of the more interesting books I have found in some time relating to presidential (or vice presidential) history.  This one starts out with a bang and keeps going.  Author Amrita Chakrabarti Myers goes down a rabbit hole that gets more interesting with each chapter...  and at the end, more rabbit holes are revealed.

Kentucky has only had a few sons that have gone on to be VP (Richard Johnson, Alben Barkley, and John Breckenridge).  Well, Richard Johnson was (and still is) very controversial.

During a time when interracial relationships were very much frowned upon in society (think 1830s and the next few decades) this politician had a black wife....  who was also owned by him as a slave.  Let that sink in for a while.

At first one might view Johnson as a progressive individual, way ahead of his time... but proceed with cation.  The author of this book uncovers some letters and possible evidence that several of his young female slaves were partners/wives at various times, and he had children with them.  Some close to the situation reported that one wife (and children she had with Johnson) were sold by him.

I know, I know, you probably have many questions right now.  Amrita goes after the answers in this one.  Had he REALLY married his slaves?  What happened to the descendants?  How had a Kentuckian, living openly with a Black wife (and their daughters) advanced to the office of VP?

The author covers this area, while also (and mainly) trying to investigate who Julia Chinn was and why she is important.  Why is it that the wife of a United State Vice President is in an unknown burial spot?

Get cozy for this one, and read slow.  There is a lot going on in this volume.

Georgetown, Kentucky -August 2022

 I have known about
Georgetown for some time, but I feel like I have just recently REALLY discovered this great town near Lexington!

A friend turned me on to the great antique mall downtown, and I have recently found a great restaurant, and dessert place!

AND, the town shows a lot of local pride in their community museum!

Bluegrass Stallions home opener- Georgetown

The Bluegrass Stallions are playing again! I am so proud of this team for sticking it out and adapting.

Sure, they are playing in a new venue, in a new league, with pretty much an entirely new team but they are still in existence!

I menti
oned before that Owensboro's minor league basketball team folded, with the team's owner blaming Owensboro for the team's problems. Well, it could be argued that the Stallions had even more problems last year, and here they are again!

I really like Georgetown. It is a short drive from Lexington. The entire town is just so comfortable. My only issue wit
h the area is that it seems all of the businesses close to early!

Still, they now have a professional basketball team!

The gy
m at Georgetown College is very cozy. It is small. You will be close to the action anywhere!

I love the mascot, HOOPS. I think he is related to the Indianapolis Colts' mascot.

The dance team was great, the team was great, and this is a nice area for ball.

This is a tough team full of personality too!

The team they played Thursday night was more height, and the Stallions looked a bit over matched. Still, thanks to tough, scrappy play, the Stallions won!

There are several fun players to watch. George Baker really stood out, playing tough and adding some comedy to the court.

General admission tickets were $8 (bench seats). Even with my $8 ticket, I could hear the players on the court.

The only problem with the team is that there previous on court personality Steve was missed. That guy is gold. Don't get me wrong, in general, I found those guys annoying at sporting events but Steve is witty.

Check out my pictures! More importantly, get out and support this team!
