National Postal Museum Washington DC

If you have read this blog before (mom) you know that I love postcards, first day covers, and mail related art.

Obviously, I was looking forward to checking out the National Postal on our trip to DC.

We agreed that this was a must stop on our trip.  In fact, this ended up being the one museum we went to twice.

Both times it was easy to get through and the feel is casual.  It was not as crowded as some of the other museums.

On display were many vehicles used to transport mail (see the photos).  Also there were many great displays of covers, stamps and other mail related items.


I know that may not sound too exciting, but it was.  I particularly enjoyed looking at the error stamps on display and reading about how they got into circulation.

The story of New York postal mascot Owney the dog was great too.  You can see the many badges and tags given to the legendary dog as he travelled.  You can also see Owney.


We REALLY loved the "Fire and Ice" exhibit.  Featured in this display were pieces of mail carrier on the Hindenburg and the Titanic!

Also, the kids will love the free postcards of each transporter, and the special postmark they can use themselves on the cards.

The museum is located right next to Union Station and is very easy to get to on your trip to DC.
