"The Breaking Point Killing And Other True Cases of Murder and Malice" by W. Joseph Wyatt is a book that wasn't on my radar, but I found it the other day while in the area and picked it up.
At first, I thought this was a standard book about true crimes that have gone down in West Virginia. As I flipped through it though, I realized that there was more to it than that.
Author/forensic psychologist Dr. W. Joseph Wyatt gives the basic details about a well known crime (mostly, but not all involving murders) in each chapter. THEN, he discusses his own involvement, usually interviewing one of the people involved to determine their mental state at the time of the crime.
I think most of us find true crime at least somewhat interesting. I am always curious about the "why". Why did it happen? Well, Dr. Wyatt gives us MUCH more to consider when it comes to these crimes. He looks at previous mental health history, family and home situations, relationships between the participants.
The author is very open with his thoughts in the book too. He will state that another psychologist saw things differently from him... but that he still respects that professionals opinion. He also talks very openly about his opinion on drug companies and pharmaceuticals.
This is an interesting read involving several crimes in the Wild and Wonderful state. I really appreciated hearing about them from a forensic psychologist who was directly involved with them.
